Living With Stress

Most of us are familiar with stressful situations whether cause by work, family or outside interventions. At the mere mention of stress we automatically think of unpleasant or threatening events. This is not always so as even the most positive and happy experiences can be stressful, such as upcoming weddings, new job, birth or a move.

The level of stress for these life events may vary with each individual and so is seen as the feelings perceived in response to life’s pressures.
The overall symptoms of stress are both mental and physical which effects heart rate, hypertension, headache, insomnia, loss of concentration, irritation, fatigue and muscular tension. In today’s world, job related stress is very common, but this does not mean that just because a person does not have a job, he or she would be stress free. Stress leads to the breakup of marriages, road rage, suicides and violence, so finding the stress factors and relieving yourself of them is the first step to a healthy life.
Two thirds of visits to the doctors is the result of stress and is also a leading cause of coronary’s, cancer, accidents, respiratory disease as well as many other problems. Life is too short and before you know it, you will be knocking on heaven door.
Financial Problems is a number one source of stress and can result from not being able to provide a certain level of comfort for you and your family to due to lack of money, the pile up of debts, unpaid credit cards and pending mortgage installments. Financial matters come top of the list.
Problems’ at work is another main cause of stress. There may be worries about promotion, facing negative or bullying behavior from your boss. You might not be reaching certain goals or are worried due to office politics. You might be stressed about some major changes that are due to take place or you may be under stress because of the prospect of losing your job.
Maintaining good health is important in the fight against stress. Certain foods can influence our moods and our mental health. Foods play an important part on our health by influencing the chemicals in the brain and blood sugar levels.
  
Mood enhancing foods help keep you in a good mood and nothing can be a substitute for good healthy food that elevates hormones like serotonin, endorphins, and other neurotransmitters. So it is important to maintain a healthy regular diet.
Breakfast as we all know is the most important meal of the day. A good filling breakfast will keep you in a good mood for most of the day such as a serving of breakfast cereal or whole wheat bread, a piece of fruit or fruit juice and eggs. Whole grain is important as they are slowly absorbed in the body which keeps the blood sugar levels stable. Carbohydrates boost the supply of tryptophan which is a type of amino acid in the brain that boosts serotonin.
Dairy products such as milk and yogurt are well known mood enhancers and help in decreasing frustrations. Bananas, avocados and strawberries are also excellent mood enhancers and rich in vitamin B6.
Green leafy vegetables are high in foliate and help in the fight against mood swings and depression. Foliate deficiency and depression are linked.
Seafoods are rich in omega 3 fatty acids and are a good overall mood enhancer.
Meats such as chicken, beef and pork are rich in sources of tyrosine which is an amino acid, and helps in boosting the levels of norepinephrine and dopamine that are responsible for keeping the mind focused and alert, and are rich in vitamin B12 that helps in the fight against depression and insomnia.
Last but not least, chocolate is another important food that is also on the list of mood enhancers. Chocolate contains caffeine and the bromine which helps elevate moods.
